I need some advice. I was told by my vet to feed my cat Science K/D due to a low specific gravity in her urine. She hates it and is wasting away because she won't eat it. I have tried the dry and the wet. She does eat some of the wet. So then I tried Eukabana (sp?) and she hates that too. So now what? I'm told it is better to give her what she likes than to let her starve. I would like to give her a good quality food that won't be too hard on her kidneys but I don't know what that would be. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi, I haven't seen any cats that like the K/D diet in canned or dry form. I too have read that it's more important for the cat to eat than to maintain the prescription diet, because if the cat isn't eating and is wasting away, the cat is not going to get any better and may become depressed as well. Fluids are very important, so you may want to offer your cat a good quality canned food (canned food contains a high moisture content).
Here is a recipe from the latest about.com cats newsletter for a homemade diet, which is regarded by many to be healthier for cats than commercial foods: Diet for CRF Management² This diet is low-protein, low-phosphorus, normal potassium, and normal sodium. It provides 55 grams of protein and 1000 kilocalories* as mixed. Chicken and Rice Diet Ingredients: 1/4 cup cooked chicken breast 1/2 ounce clams, chopped in juice (canned) 1/2 cup rice, long-grain, cooked 1 Tbsp. chicken fat 1/8 teaspoon salt substitute (potassium chloride) 1/4 multiple vitamin-mineral tablet 1/10 B complex vitamin-trace mineral tablet (Give it your best shot.) Chop chicken and combine all ingredients. As should be the case with all home-prepared recipes (and canned commercial food), take up and discard the uneaten portion after 30 minutes. I wish you and your cat well. Let me know how she does. |

I'm not sure my cat would eat this but I can give it a try. Have you ever tried this or known anyone that has? But lets say she doesn't eat it. What would be the very best can food I could give her?

Nutro (available at Petsmart), Wellness, Natural Balance, Pet Guard, California Natural, and Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul are all highly rated brands. If your cat does not like these premium brands, which are available from vets, pet supply stores, or online (www.petfooddirect.com), try any canned food that has real meat rather than meat by-products. Hello. I went to both Pet Smart and Pet Co and only one of the stores had one of the foods you had listed. Pet Smart had the Natural Balance so I tried a couple cans of that. My cat just picked at it. I also gave it to the other two cats and I think the one threw it up because it was too rich for him. It does seem as if my cat is now eating the Science Diet K/D better. She is stable at 9.14 lbs. right now. So I will just stay on this for a while. I read somewhere that it is wise to invest in baby scale to keep tabs on the weight of cats. So I did purchase one and will watch her really closely. Thanks for your advice.

Glad to hear your cat is doing better.
I did mention that the premium brands are available from vets, private pet supply stores (not chains like Petsmart and Petco, which DO however carry Nutro), and online. www.petfooddirect.com carries several of the better brands of food. |
