My cat had blood in urine but has now cleared up and he is urinating normally. After a urine test however, the vet said there are crystal present. He has been on synulox antibiotics, garlic & fenugreek and vegetable tablets to help with urination. The vet now wants to do an x ray of the bladder to see if there are stones or crystals present. Does any one know if it is normal practice to investigate this way? I am concerned with exposure to radiation if it uneccessary. Thanks in advance for any comments.

According to an article in Whole Cat Journal, about 20% of lower urinary tract disease cases involve stones. Crystals may be present by themselves or in conjunction with a stone. Struvite crystals and stones can be dissolved by acidifying the urine. This takes time, so if the stones are large, surgery may be the best option to relieve the cat's pain. Calcium oxalate stones must be removed surgically. Hopefully, your cat does not have any stones, but it may be in his best interest to allow the vet to check for them.
What diet is your cat eating? Holistic vets stress that a canned food (or homemade) diet (rather than dry food) is most important in cases of LUTD. The moisture in canned food helps to keep the urine from becoming too concentrated. I hope his problem is soon resolved! Good luck! |

Thank you for your comments. My Cat was rushed to the vet in a grea deal of pain after difficulty in urinating once again. He had a bladder and kidney flush and is now much better. The vet has recommended Royal Canin Urinary moist and dried food which he is not keen on but will eat the dried version. This is to acidify the urine and hopefully dissolve the struvite crystals. He is still taking garlic & fenugreek and mixed veg tablet as well.
