Just adopted two 5 month old orange tabbies. One immediately developed an upper respiratory infection and pink eye. Now the other one seems to also have them. Have been treating with Panmycin Aquadrops(tetracycline) and Terramycin Ophthalmic Ointment for 5 days but so far little improvement if any. Otherwise they seem fine. Any suggestions or will it take more time? Are kepping them away from our 12 1/2 old boyfriend so that he doesn't get sick.

It's good that you're keeping them separate from your older cat. Vaccines offer some, but not complete, protection from upper respiratory viruses.
My own 3 sibling cats were up and down with a URI for months when they were kittens. Different viruses can cause the illness. The antibiotics help with secondary infections, but the virus can be much like the human cold that has to run its course. The vet can change antibiotics. That helped in my situation with my kittens. There are other eye treatments and oral antibiotics. Keep in touch with your vet concerning the progress of the kittens. He/she may want to change the treatment. If the kittens came from a shelter, they probably were exposed to the virus there. Because of the number of cat and kittens in shelters and the stress of the shelter environment, respiratory viruses are always a problem. The incubation period of the virus may have ended at the time you adopted the kittens, or the stress of moving to a new place may have caused the onset of symptoms. Don't worry yet. It can take quite a while for kittens to completely recover from URI's. Good diet and loving care are most helpful. Good luck and please keep us posted as to their progress! |

They seem much better now though they sneeze a lot. Got them from someone that fostered them and probably some more. They had cute little ones at the time but I know they would find an easy home and these 2 older cutties (two of their siblings had been taken some time ago) were not chosen for an unknown reason. The foster person gave them Pro Plan kitten food (can & dry) and suggested that we continue, for the time being. Have been giving them 1/2 can each a.m. & p.m. but they still seem hungry. One is not too keen of the dry stuff. Would love to introduce them to Rascal already. Would have replied sooner but my computer has been acting up. Nannette's Dad |

You mentioned that you're feeding half can of food am and pm...I'm guessing you're supplementing with dry food also, right? You can basically go off of the can/bag for the recommended food allotment. Kittens need enough food so their growing bodies get the sustenence they need. Your vet will also be a good resource to see how much is enough for them.
If one of them isn't too keen on the dry food, try switching to another brand. Any of the higher quality food - Iams, Science Diet etc - will be a good choice. Also, just one caution - your older cat should not eat the kitten food. It's higher in fat and all that for their growing bodies. Your older cat should be on Senior food, so I would highly recommend talking to your vet about how to make sure each of your kitties is fed properly and with the correct food. Have been supplementing their meals with some dry food. They are actually getting a little fat. Have gradually introduced them to the big boy who hisses and runs away. I have patience. Still haven't given them permanent names. Everything seems to be ok. |
