My cat is 20 years old, and besides having diarehha most of the time, he has a usual appetite and is still mobile. His meow has gotten louder and we thought that he would pass on by now and was wondering if we should put him to sleep? We don't have the money to spend for vet costs and seem that since he's been living for so long, we would hate to take him to a vet after all these years and have them tell us "He's old". We took him when he was young and got his vaccinations, but must have done something right since he's lived for so long. We also have an 18 year old cat that is still as lovable as ever. What should we do? Wait, or put him out of his misery?

How do you know he's in misery? His normal appetite is a good sign. The diarrhea could be caused by irritable bowel, cancer, or just an inability to digest his food the way he used to. A change in diet may help. A high quality canned food should be good for him. Vets take credit cards and some will work out payment arrangements if you can't pay now. Without an exam and blood test, you won't know if your cat is in ill health or not.
