Dogs can have strokes, but they are very rare. I can go into detail about vestibular disease,if you'd like me to. Are you in the USA ? If you feel the vet was unconcerned that your dog may have had a stroke, I don't think I'd trust him/her. I hope Murphy Brown has had some improvement. Let me know if you want the info, and how she is doing this week. Writing her sympyoms and behavior down in a diary for the vet may help get the correct diagnosis. Thank you for writing, I haven't checked the site for a while.
Murphy did rebound from the first episode, but was not completely herself. She did not have the same energy or interest level as before and she slept much more. She no longer danced on me to get me up in the morning, I had to wake her. Over Memorial Day weekend she was again not feeling well. She moped around all weekend and seemed a little stiff and apathetic. Not anywhere near as bad as the first time, but still not well. This lasted about 4 days. The next day when I got home from work, she seemed back to normal. She was excited to see me, she was eager for her walk and actually ran. She seems to be 100% back to normal. She just isn't eating. I have tried everything and she might eat something once, but not again. She is now eating a peanut butter sandwich for breakfast and maybe a couple of hotdogs for supper. I hate feeding her so much fatty food, but she had lost 6 lbs over the winter and she can't afford to lose any more weight. She does not look or act like an old dog and the thought of a stroke taking her scares me to death. She had never been sick in the ten years I've had her until now. I know I've been lucky, but I am not ready to let her go. Thank you again, Noahsark, for your concern and I will appreciate any information you can give me. And yes, we live in Mass. |

Udate on Roger & Urgent Advice on Canine NSAIDS | ||

Roger was doing fine, he never fully recovered, had lingering mild vestibular signs and seemed to want to sleep more, but he was able to get around fine and of course still loved to play and go for walks.
His arthritis was causing Roger more difficulty recently. Compared to carpet, the smooth/slippery tile in our kitchen/dining area made it very tough for Roger to get up once he had laid down. I still had some of the complementary/trial Rimadyl and had heard a number of stories from friends and neighbors praising the drug's recouperative effects on their dogs. So I started giving Roger two 50mg tablets a day. The Rimadyl had a significant positive effect, Roger was much more mobile and apt to run where before he would pretty much only walk. After a week the sample ran out so I bought a bottle of 60 tablets. I proceeded to give him just one 75mg tablet per day. About a week later, Roger exhibited Vestibular symptoms... shaky eye(s) and loss of balance. My heart was breaking. I immediately stopped the Rimadyl and gave him Prednizone for two days. I had to walk with him holding him up for the next 24 hours. He's almost back to where he was prior to this second episode, but not quite. He has additinoal lingering effects manifesting in mild vestibular symptoms. They don't slow him down, but he will start to lose his balance and/or bump into things sometimes. I'm now convinced the cause of both episodes is the Rimadyl. I don't even know if I had mentioned that I had started giving Roger Rimadyl prior to the first episode. Well, I did. It was a complementary sample and why not try it out eh? Especiall after hearing a good report on the medicine from my good friend. I didn't connect the symptoms to the Rimadyl before, but now after a 2nd episode and some research on the net I'm convinced the Rimadyl is to blame. Too many others have reported the same symptoms after giving their dog rimadyl. My Vet is good, so I told him about the recent episode. This was the first he had heard of Rimadyl causing vestibular symptoms, but he did say that most any canine NSAID is a risky medicine. He recommends only giving NSAIDs in intermittent dosages, like once or twice per week or simply as required, when you dog is showing significant signs of arthritic distress. So anyway, if you are giving your dog any kind of arthritis medicine, especially any non-steroidal anti-inflamatory drug (NSAID), please be attentive. If you see any signs of imbalance or twitchiness in the eyes, my advice would be to STOP medicating with the NSAID immediately. Roger will be 15 this October. I've been so blessed to have him this long, I just wish I had known not to medicate him with regular/daily doses of NSAIDs. That goes for aspirin, tylenol (ibuprofen), whatever. Thanks all. I started this thread, so I thought I'd post an update. Roger eventually recovered to about 80% of his pre-episode physical abilities and enjoyed living
life for another three years. We upgraded his diet and that seemed to really help. In addition to raw foods he also enjoyed the Dick Van Patten Lamb product.
He did eventually suffer a couple more episodes but not so severe, until the final one at sixteen (16) years of age. I still miss my buddy. What a wonderful
blessing he was. Thanks everyone for your advice.
