Dog Chewing and Biting Himself Non-stop |

Hi everyone. I have two 5 month old "Shepherd mix" puppies and one of them has been chewing, licking and biting himself almost constantly lately. Today I noticed he has a spot at the end of his tail (near his rear-end) that is missing hair and has a sore on it. After noticing this I looked him over really good and noticed that where he licks his inner leg there is hair starting to fall out there as well. My other dog (from the same litter) doesn't do this at all, he seems perfectly fine. I need help on this situation. If anyone has heard of experiences like this one and knows of a cure (lotion, medicine) or any other method of solving this problem I would love to hear it and would appreciate the help. For the meantime I was thinking of getting one of those plastic shields that go over his head to keep him from licking himself. Thanks in advance!

I actually had the same problem with my lab/shepard mix. I took her to the groomer because i thought she had fleas, and they actually diagnosed it for me. It turns out that dogs have 2 glads under their anus that release a scent when they go to the bathroom. Some dogs glands, (like your dogs), may be malfunctioning and not releasing the fluids which can cause a build up of the fluids and a lot of irritation for the dog. I took my lab mix to PetSmart and the groomers can actually release the pressure and fix it. Any groomer should be able to do this. Your dog will feel better instantly and stop scratching almost immidiately. My dog grew all of her hair back. It has to be done every few months to keep from irritating the dog though. Hope this helps!!!

I have a yellow lab, oh boy does he itch, no fleas no ticks no skin irritation. Sometimes I think he just does it for attention. But now I am itching. I even gave him a bath with oatmeal. changed his dog food, just tried a new shampoo. my female is deaf and helps him itch. But I never thought on checking the old rear.. I refuse to take my dogs to vets in this state. Killed my other dog and now I just make sure they get there shots which I give it.. But it seems all my boy dogs have problems. Not my female.. I did get him checked and there was no problem. I need help too?

THERE IS NOTHING MORE ANOYING THAN A DOG CONSTANTLY LICKING OR CHEWING HIMSELF! MY YORKIE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM-VET DIAGNOSED HIM WITH MITES ALTHOUGH I COULD NOT SEE ANYTHING ON HIS SKIN. I HAD LOOKED FOR FLEAS ETC. WE THINK HE GOT THEM FROM A DEAD ANIMAL AND AFTER THEY DIPPED HIM, HE WAS FINE.
